1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL

This 1968 Mercedes-Benz 280SL is the ideal basis for your perfect Pagoda. Whether you like its hot rod attitude, thanks to a GM 400ci V8 and GM automatic transmission, or you want to return the car to stock with the included original engine and transmission, this Pagoda can become a perfect classic Mercedes, or something rather more rowdy.

The 400ci V8 was installed by a prior owner, and the automatic transmission’s shift pattern has been reversed to work with the factory Mercedes-Benz shifter. The car currently moves under its own power, turns, and stops, with a throaty exhaust note from the big V8.

The factory 2.8-liter inline-six was included with the car, as was the original 4-speed Mercedes-Benz automatic transmission, both of which are shown in the gallery below. These are the original numbers matching components,  not replacements.

The factory hard top is included, and the convertible top is intact under the SL’s distinctive hardshell top boot.

Critically, this SL is solid in all the right places, with all of the hard to find factory trim and other hardware intact. Some perforation is visible in the driver’s side floor, but as shown in our detailed gallery the floors, rockers, and suspension mounts on this SL are very solid.

With Pagoda SL prices steadily on the rise, cars like this that give the owner the option of staying stock or going a bit more wild, are steadily dwindling. This 280SL represents a unique oppurtunity for the owner to create their perfect SL, whether it’s a factory 280, or a brawnier SL with a torquey American V8.

This car was auctioned on BringaTrailer.com and is going to a new home in Brazil.
